Brazil’s BRICS Balancing Act Is Getting Harder
The bloc’s expansion is amplifying its anti-Western tendencies, creating strategic risks for Brazil.
Since Brazil co-founded the BRICS in 2009, Brazilian analysts and politicians have largely agreed that membership brought tangible benefits to the country—including closer ties to China. But as this year’s summit approaches, the costs are adding up. The meeting in Kazan, Russia, will occur as the invasion of Ukraine, more than halfway through its third year, continues to cloud Vladimir Putin’s reputation.
BRICS membership (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) helped solidify Brazil’s status as an emerging power, a narrative that has held up remarkably well despite economic stagnation during the last decade. It also guaranteed Brazilian leaders regular facetime with China’s political leadership and bureaucracy, which became the country’s top trading partner in 2009.
The countless intra-BRICS meetings on areas ranging from defense and health to education and the environment helped Brazil’s bureaucracy, largely ignorant about China until recently, adapt to a less Western-centric world. Perhaps most importantly, however—and often overlooked by Western analysts—is that Brazil found common cause with other BRICS members in seeking to actively shape the transition towards multipolarity, which they regard not only as inevitable but also desirable and a development that will help constrain Washington.
Meanwhile, the costs of BRICS membership were largely seen as negligible, so neither center-right president Michel Temer (2016-18) nor far-right president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-22) questioned Brazil’s membership. On the contrary, by the end of his government, Bolsonaro was a pariah in most of the West, but thanks to the BRICS grouping, he avoided complete diplomatic isolation. After all, it was only during encounters with fellow BRICS leaders that the former right-wing president could be sure not to face uncomfortable questions about his handling of the pandemic, deforestation or his unfounded allegations about electoral fraud.
Recent developments in the BRICS grouping, however, have the potential to undermine this relatively broad consensus in Brazil vis-à-vis the benefits of membership. Until last year, Brazil had, along with India, successfully prevented the bloc’s expansion, promoted by Beijing since 2017. Both Brasília and Delhi feared a loss of the grouping’s exclusivity and a loss of capacity to control intra-BRICS dynamics, having worked to fend off efforts by China and Russia to include anti-Western language in the summit declarations. Symbolizing the growing rift between an anti-Western bloc and another that opts for multi-alignment (or non-alignment), Russia often seeks to portray BRICS as a counterweight to the G7, while President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva likes to insist that BRICS is “not against anyone.”

It's a day ending in "y," so here are some more movies, most of them bad:
DIAVOLO IN CORPO (1986): Sexually explicit but generally lackluster Franco-Italian drama about an affair between a high school boy, Andrea (Federico Pitzalis), and a 20something woman called Giulia (Maruschka Detmers), who's engaged to a political prisoner currently lobbying for release under a new clemency law. Loosely adapted from Raymond Radiguet's 1923 novel LE DIABLE AU CORPS, the film departs so much from the original story that one struggles to see the point: In the novel, the boy (who narrates) and his mistress (whose name is Marthe, not Giulia) are both teenagers — when they meet, they're 15 and 18 respectively — and Marthe is engaged and later married to a soldier away fighting in WW1. Stripped of that context, Radiguet's sardonic first-person narration, and most of the novel's plot, the script preoccupies itself with painting Giulia as a maniac who threatens to castrate her young lover while he's sleeping and may have had an affair with his therapist father — bleah! (The book, which Radiguet wrote at 18 and which was at least semi-autobiographical, has been adapted several times, some more faithful than others.) CONTAINS LESBIANS: No. VERDICT: Greatly inferior to the source novel, with little to offer besides sex and misogyny.
THE MACK (1973): Unexceptional blaxploitation drama about an ex-con called Goldie (Max Julian), newly released after five years in prison on a robbery beef, who decides to reinvent himself as a pimp, much to the dismay of his politically conscious brother (Roger E. Mosley). Richard Pryor has a noncomedic supporting role as Goldie's childhood friend and one-time co-conspirator. Not as clunky as some blaxploitation films of its time (it's head and shoulders above the conceptually similar WILLIE DYNAMITE, for instance), but not particularly memorable either, and its attitude toward women is hard to stomach, particularly in a bizarre sequence where Goldie tries to build a cult of personality around himself. Its main virtue is the soundtrack by Willie Hutch; the movie is no classic, but Hutch's end-credits theme song ("Brother's Gonna Work It Out") definitely is. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Not in any meaningful way. VERDICT: Stick to the soundtrack album.
PATTY HEARST (1988): Dull, mostly unsatisfying attempt to dramatize Patty Hearst's 1974 kidnapping/recruitment by the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), starring Natasha Richardson as Hearst. Based on Hearst's 1982 autobiography, it tries to convey her state of mind by sticking close to her point of view, beginning with her abduction and psychological torture/indoctrination at the hands of the SLA and its leader, Cinque (Ving Rhames), and ending with Hearst's conviction for crimes committed while part of the SLA. (Her sentence was commuted in 1979.) If you're not familiar with at least the basics of the story, you'll likely be completely lost, because the framing is deliberately disorienting, though never very engaging. In its determination to suggest that Hearst was non compos mentis through much of the period it depicts, the film leaves her something of a blank, and the portrayal of the other SLA members is thin and wooden; Rhames' charisma compensates to some extent, but costars Dana Delany, Frances Fisher, and William Forsythe are just not good enough to make up for the weakness of the script (which is by Nicholas Kazan, son of infamous HUAC collaborator Elia Kazan.) It only comes to life near the end, following Hearst's capture, which hints at a more interesting movie that failed to materialize. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Several of the other SLA members were wlw. VERDICT: Reading Hearst's Wikipedia entry and then watching the SLA pastiche in NETWORK (1976) would tell you just as much and be significantly more entertaining.
RAMBO: LAST BLOOD (2019): Seeing Stallone's engaging turn in TULSA KING gave me the misguided notion that maybe some of his other recent projects might be passable time-wasters. Not so this extremely dreary, very racist hokum about John Rambo, the improbably durable Troubled Vietnam Vet™ from Stallone's inexplicably popular '80s action series (originally based on a David Morrell novel, whose protagonist did not survive the story), trying to save the Latina granddaughter of his caretaker (Yvette Monreal) from evil Mexican human traffickers led by Sergio Peris-Mencheta (apparently taking time out from his role on SNOWFALL) with the help of Paz Vega. Why anyone thought the RAMBO series needed a fifth installment 11 years after the the previous movie (to which it's unrelated) is anyone's guess, but the results are wholly free of redeeming virtue — sadistic and jingostic almost from the jump, and most of the Mexican characters are played by Spaniards! I noped out after less than an hour. CONTAINS LESBIANS? No. VERDICT: If you want vicious racist bullshit about the evils of The Border, you could just watch presidential campaign ads (from either party) for free.
SERIAL MOM (1994): Appropriately ridiculous John Waters satire about deranged Baltimore housewife Beverly Sutphin (Kathleen Turner), who becomes a serial killer lashing out at anyone who tests her fragile sense of propriety. Eventually, she becomes a popular celebrity, even defending herself at her much-publicized murder trial. Sam Waterston, Ricki Lake and Matthew Lillard costar as her family, with an assortment of absurd cameos and supporting bits — Juror No. 8, whose white shoes (after Labor Day!) so offend Beverly during her trial, is played by Patty Hearst! The film doesn't quite find its groove until the nightclub scene (featuring L7 as "The Camel Lips"), and its satirical take on the derangement of straight white suburbia is not exactly deep (or subtle), but it remains fun, thanks mostly to Kathleen Turner's commitment to the bit; she's great. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Not as such — it's a Waters film about straight suburbia, so none of the characters are normal (gay). VERDICT: Tame by Waters standards, but a minor classic worth seeing for Turner alone.

Assault Lily × Ludvico Private Girls' Academy: The Blade of Truth
For obvious reasons, I'm not writing the full title of the play.
Ever since The Gleam of Dawn had its run earlier this year, my opinion has been that it was the best individual one of the Assault Lily stage plays, but the Ludvico quartet (in their revival versions when those existed) are the best series. And though The Blade of Truth was by no means bad and a worthy finale to the series, my opinion hasn't changed.
Extensive spoilers for the play below. Don't click unless you want to be spoiled! (Also, I talk about death, so a content warning for that.)
The Blade of Truth is actually the only one of the Ludvico stage plays that I've watched the original 2019 performance of, because there was no alternative at the time I was first watching the series. It was… okay. Definitely rough compared to the revivals, but I wasn't sure how much of it was inherent and how much was because of the lower budget those plays were working with.
It turns out that at least a little of it was inherent, but I'll focus on what was good first.
BoT 2023 (I'll abbreviate it as that from now on) was excellently produced. Assault Lily's stage tradition of projecting video onto the stage came out crystal clear, for nearly the first time ever, and was used to great effect every scene it happened in.
Though the choreography wasn't quite as fancy as The Gleam of Dawn's, it was frequently impressive, and the playwright/director duo of Sakuragi Sayaka and Hayashi Shuuji elevated their trademark of simultaneous scenes to new heights by occasionally having important conversations take place on one half of the stage while battles occurred on the other.
The story was an improvement over the 2019 version with a variety of small changes to the script, and possibly also thanks to the years of extra experience the actresses and staff have. Asahi and Nagisa were adorable together, the flashback scenes with Kazane made her feel less like just Mirai #2, Ichika and Karen both got even cooler, Himari was a lot more likeable, and Nonoka's scenes were somehow even funnier.
In the back half, Professor Amamiya "installing" himself into Kosaka the same way various other characters have makes a lot more sense than the 2019 version's brain transplant. I feel really bad for Kosaka, since she seems to momentarily regain her original personality just before she dies… well, no one ever said Assault Lily stories have happy endings for everyone.
Also, Pius seems to have mostly recovered from whatever issue they had in 2022 where the stage cameras and microphones precipitously dropped in quality (maybe Bushiroad gave them loaners and took them back when they pulled out of the Assault Lily project?)
What wasn't so great? Well, it's an ongoing thing with the Ludvico series, but the plain-looking hairstyles/costumes and boring CHARMs are disappointing coming from the other stage plays. They provide the advantage that they avoid having the occasional ugly-as-sin wig (like Kasumiko's in The Gleam of Dawn,) but I wish the crew had at least used different shades of natural hair so the characters are easier to tell apart. I don't see why Yuko couldn't be a blonde and so forth.
In BoT 2023, a reasonable amount of characters have custom CHARMs (or at least less common ones like Kazane's Triglav,) but I'll be quite happy if I never see another Dainsleif Carbine or Gungnir Carbine again in my life.
I'm still not a fan of The Blade of Truth's plot, particularly the second half. I've always been disappointed by Assault Lily's dull villains and feel that Toda Kotohi is the only one, in any part of the media mix, who's genuinely a great character. A bunch of nuns and Kosaka-sensei repeatedly screaming "This is for the good of humanity!" haven't changed my mind on that.
The fights were really cool, and Makabe and Kosaka in particular have their moments, but I wish we knew more about what they were actually trying to accomplish instead of them just seeming crazy.
While Sakuragi may have felt she couldn't make a change that drastic to the script in a revival, I think Ichika should have died when Makabe shot her. It really undermined the impact of that moment when she was just fine later, and more broadly I feel that Assault Lily's aversion to allowing even a single Lily to die in the present clashes badly with how its strongest plotlines are based on the deaths of characters in the past, like Mirai.
If Yuria had died in the previous Ludvico play, that would be fine too. Just kill someone. Anyone!
I feel very edgy saying that, but I really believe AL tests the limits of our disbelief with how everything, all of a sudden, always turns out just fine for the Lilies. (Unless you're a teacher, in which case you have a 75% chance of dying horribly.)
Anyway. BoT 2023 is a solid play, not the best Assault Lily stage play and not the best Ludvico one either (I think that's probably Schwester's Secret), but well worth watching. Don't miss it… though it's a little late to say that now.

Since the only movie I'm watching tonight is 200 Cigarettes, I've got my list of movies I watched for the first time this year. It's a little low (158 instead of the usual +/- 200) but... well, it's been a year.
Property is No Longer a Theft (1973, Ello Petri)

[ad_1] Courtesy: Hockey India Hockey India fetes the legend with Rs 10 lakh cash award; announces retiring Rani’s famed Jersey No.28 ~ New Delhi, 24th October 2024: In a poignant moment at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium today, former Indian Women’s Hockey Team Captain, Rani, announced her retirement from international hockey after the conclusion of the PFC India vs Germany Bilateral Hockey Series 2024. Known far and wide as the Queen of Indian Hockey, Rani now shifts her focus to coaching and nurturing the future stars of the sport. Rani’s journey began at just 14 years old, making her the youngest player for the Indian Women’s Hockey Team when she took to the field at the Olympic Qualifier in Kazan, Russia, in April 2008. Over the course of a remarkable 14-year career, she led the Indian team to numerous triumphs, including the historic fourth-place finish at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Hailing from humble beginnings in Shahbaad Markanda, Haryana, Rani’s rise to stardom was paved with challenges. Despite the odds, she emerged as a beacon of hope, drawing inspiration from the academy run by legendary coach Baldev Singh. “After almost 15 years of wearing the Indian jersey with pride, it’s time for me to step off the field as a player and begin a new chapter. Hockey has been my passion, my life, and the greatest honor I could ever have asked for. From small beginnings to representing India on the biggest stages, this journey has been nothing short of incredible,” Rani recalled fondly. Under her captaincy, India broke a 13-year drought to clinch the Women’s Asia Cup in 2017. She also became the first Indian Women’s Hockey player to be nominated for the FIH Women’s Young Player of the Year Award. Throughout her career, Rani has been honored with numerous accolades, including the Arjuna Award in 2016, World Games Athlete of the Year in 2019, Best Women Player of the Year in 2019 by Hockey India, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2020, and the Padma Shri Award in 2020. “Playing for India came with a lot of recognition but the moments that I will cherish the most are the ones I spent training with the team and facing tough teams together. One such moment was at the Tokyo Olympics where the team ran ragged for each other, this unity led us to victory over some tough teams. As I call it a day on my career, I am filled with pride and belief that the Indian Women’s Hockey Team will go on to great things in the future,” she added. Courtesy: Hockey India Rani is set to take charge as the Women’s Mentor and Indian Coach of Soorma Hockey Club in the revamped Hockey India League this December. She has already dabbled in a similar role when she became the chief coach of the Indian sub-junior girls’ team during Hockey India’s 100th Executive Board Meeting in Chennai last year. Rani even undertook the FIH Educators Course in July to upskill herself for this new chapter. “I’m forever grateful to my teammates, coaches, and every single fan who supported me along the way. I am grateful to Hockey India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, SAI, Haryana Government and Odisha Government for their support. Though I won’t be playing anymore, my love for the game continues. I look forward to new roles and give back to the sport that has given me so much,” she commented on her future plans. Rani’s indomitable spirit and determination to overcome societal pressures have left an indelible mark. She continues to inspire young hockey players, standing tall as a symbol of breaking barriers and chasing dreams. Rani truly remains the Queen of Indian Hockey, a legacy that will live on. LAC Tensions Ease with Landmark Deal
The significant agreement reached between India and China this week to resolve one of the longest military standoffs in recent history received formal approval on Wednesday from PM Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping. This bilateral meeting at the BRICS Summit marked their first encounter in five years, during which they endorsed the deal. According to the Indian side, this endorsement from the highest level is expected to further alleviate tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
During their 50-minute discussion in Kazan, the leaders agreed to promptly hold Special Representatives (SRs) talks on the India-China boundary issue, which has not occurred since 2019. They emphasized the need to advance relations from a “strategic and long-term perspective,” enhance strategic communication and explore collaborative efforts to tackle developmental challenges.
The Special Representatives, Ajit Doval, and Wang Yi have met multiple times on the sidelines of various multilateral events, including a meeting last month in St. Petersburg, but not within the formal SR talks framework.
In the Indian readout, Modi expressed his support for the agreement concerning complete disengagement and the resolution of issues that emerged in 2020 in eastern Ladakh, which included the deadly Galwan clash that year. He stressed the importance of properly managing differences and disputes to maintain peace and tranquility.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that Modi also expressed India’s full support for China’s presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in 2025. China characterized the meeting as constructive and of great significance. Read More-https://24x7newsroom.com/pm-modi-and-xi-finalize-lac-agreement-committing-to-restore-relations/

The highly anticipated and important talks between Modi and Xi have occurred with excellent results as reported by numerous media outlets. While the RT report is positive the one provided by Global Times is deeper and tells readers why the results are critical. Instead of paraphrasing what the latter report says, I’ll let it speak for itself and explain why Modi seems to have ceased sitting on a pointy picket fence and put India’s fundamental interests first:
Chinese President Xi Jinping met Wednesday with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit. Chinese analysts said the meeting has strategic significance as the recovery of China-India relations serves not only the interests of both countries, but also the multi-polarization of the world order.
During his meeting with Modi in Kazan, Russia, Xi urged China and India to facilitate each other's pursuit of development aspirations. Xi said the two sides should strengthen communication and cooperation, properly manage differences and disagreements, the Xinhua News Agency reported.
This is the first bilateral meeting between the two leaders since 2019, when they met bilaterally in the southern Indian city of Chennai at the second informal India-China summit. The first informal meeting between the two leaders took place in Wuhan, Central China's Hubei Province, in April 2018. In 2023, Xi also had talks with Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in South Africa at the latter's request.
Lin Minwang, a deputy director of the Center for South Asian Studies at Fudan University, told the Global Times on Wednesday that the meeting shows that China-India relations are now on the track of recovery, as the two sides have reached resolutions on issues concerning the border area, so the obstacle that has blocked the recovery of bilateral ties has been removed.
"Over a recent period of time, China and India have reached resolutions on issues concerning the border area following close communication through diplomatic and military channels. China commends the progress made and will continue working with India for the sound implementation of these resolutions," said Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said at a regular press conference on Tuesday.
Li Haidong, a professor at China Foreign Affairs University, told the Global Times on Wednesday that the meeting proves that this international organization formed by emerging economies is an important platform and channel for major countries to coordinate with each other on sensitive issues with diplomacy, to fix damaged ties and to reach consensus.
